Thanksgiving parade New York and walking the Highline
headed out for the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade. Walked along 53rd w and it wasn’t too busy. But we headed north and ran into thousands of people. Eventually crossed over to the other side as it was elevated, plus it also allowed us to head west to the river once we had had enough. Wanted to check out the ferry to Holken on our way down to Hudson Station to get on the high line walkway.
Nine dollars for the ferry crossing, but it also provided a free transfer shuttle bus that would pick us up. It’s circular route goes near to the hotel that we are staying in.
Must say that all the people we spoke to when we were trying to get the information on the ferry crossing timetable and accessibility were really helpful. We are now left with a choice, either get on the shuttle which will take us to the ferry and then take it over or get the train which is only $2.75 which will also take us to the same point.
We waited in the freezing cold for the parade to start. Eventually a motorcade swept by, signalling the start of the parade.
It was difficult to see anything other than the balloons, plus there were big gaps in between each band or float, Which made it quite boring, so we headed off. Stopping at McDonalds for coffee, and succumbed to a sausage egg McMuffin
Found the ferry terminal and ascertained that there was a free bus transfer that we could use that stops close to the hotel.fare for the crossing $9.00
Continued along by the cruise ship terminal and military museum before heading onto the Highline walkway. A old rail track that has been converted into a garden and walkway. Goes over the Hudson rail track and next to a massive shopping arcade before heading down to the old part of Hudson Bay. It passes through modern architecture, as well as the old Hudson Docks that have been converted into shops and restaurants.
Headed into the Smart Chelsea area and stumbled across the Chelsea market, and enormous underground market that used to be a warehouse that has been turned into subterranean shops and restaurants
