End of March visit to France
On Saturday we have a small
amount of sun, so we head out to the cliffs, walking over to Warmer, down to
the old Marines Shooting range before returning by Kingsdown golf course home.
The day was rather misty, due to the previous nights crispy frost and the early
morning sun. Nevertheless, it was a glorious walk, and just the ticket before
our quick dash back to France to collect the remainder of our belongings.
During the walk we had some
gorgeous views of the gulls as they swept from the sea, climbing on the wind
and popping over the edge, soaring high before heading back down to sea level.
The cliffs continue to erode, and the old paths are now too unsafe to use. The
National Trust have taken over the managing of the White Cliffs and sensibly
moved the walk further inland away from the crumbling edges.
Whilst we sat, overlooking
the golf course a gorgeous kestrel decided that there was a tasty morsel not
far from us. Wings closed, and pulled in as it plummets to the earth.
Managed to get quite a few
photographs as it hovered seeking it next grasshopper or other scrap of food.
At the last minute, we
managed to hire a van for three days, so on Monday we set off at 8am, arriving
in the Charente late that evening. Stayed over with friends, and then with the
assistance, managed to load the van with all our belongings and shoot off back
to Dover by 11am. Fortunate enough to get on an earlier crossing, arriving in
River by 10pm. The weather was good, so we emptied the van onto the lawn,
completing the task by 1am. Two days, 1000 miles travelled.
The
following day was spent sorting all the tools and equipment and storing it
between the garage and shed. By 11am we were off out again, collecting Aunty
Joyce and taking her and Gwen out for lunch, followed by a trip to do the
weekly shopping.
