driving North again

Drive up to Carlisle in one hit, it was a Sunday so the traffic was amazingly light, even through the melange of lane closures and road works that spread the whole length of the motorway journey through Birmingham. I say, roadwork’s, but over the past four visits up and down the motorway the roads have been devoid of any work or workmen, just reduced speed signs and closed lanes. Perhaps they are undertaking excavation work below the surface. They have used all the surface space, so they are now building new motorways to cope with the congestion underground.

Arrived in Carlisle at 3pm and booked into one of those budget hotels that is promoted heavily by a very tall comedian. Well, must say that the Premier Inn on Warwick Road definitely lived up to Lenny Henry's advert.
In the television adverts Lenny boasts that ‘everything’s premier but the price’, and at £29 per night he is right on the wicket. Which is more than we can say about the English Cricketers. Least said the better.

Had a good catch up with friends that evening before returning back to the hotel through an almighty deluge of rain.

"Left early next morning to see the accountant and our friends Pat and John who took us out to this fairly new restaurant,The Gilded Lilly. The menu was interesting with starters that could be shared. We had the prawn and chorizo, which was tasty but rather overcooked which killed the delicate flavour of the prawns. Perhaps a little more investigation into Spanish tapas using chorizo, there are many. Our friends had a cheese dip, which was tasty and the bread was excellent. Main course for my friend and l was the belly of pork on apple and onion mash and it was divine. Tender and tasty. A really good choice. Judith had a burger which was solid meat and excellent. Our friend’s wife had the pie of the day, and she thought it was delicious. We on a time limit so we didn’t stop for pudding or coffee, but the wine by glass was tasty and good value for money. Atmosphere was muted, but it was a Monday lunch and the weather was awful. Would definitely visit again."

On the way to meet our friends for lunch we were caught out by another deluge, this time it was horizontal rain and hail. One minute we had blue sky’s the next it became as black as evening. By the time we had reached Pat and Johns my jeans were soaking.

John looking quite shocked as l drop my jeans and put them in the tumble dryer. Pat took it in her stride as always. John lent me his dressing gown so modesty was maintained.

The River Eden was in full flood, but not as bas has it has been in the past. It was shortly after this that the sky's went black and all hell was let loose.
