World Cruise QM2 - 9th March 19 degrees C overcast sea day heading for Adelaide
9th March 19 degrees C overcast sea day heading for Adelaide
Up early, 7am and pounded the decks until 8.15. Then had breakfast by myself, Judith was going to lie in until 11. Couldn’t see Chris and Jill, so l tried to catch up on the diary. It’s difficult when the days are spent ashore, sightseeing and enjoying yourself.
Before l new it, it was time for Ti Chi, didn’t expect many people to attend after the ball last night. Wasn’t wrong, although they all eventually materialised, albeit rather hung over.
Learnt some new moves and practice our eight form.
I had left Judith in bed. My instructions were quite explicit, keep away, let me sleep.
So headed upstairs for a coffee and bumped into C&J, and joined them over a pan aux chocolate.
Then headed to the theatre for the first lecture of the day. Story about the Australian gold medal winning hockey player, Rochelle Hawkes. the trials and tribulations on the way to get into team from the early age of 16. Quite interesting.
The following lecture was spell binding. The history of Japanese soldiers who continued to fight, even though the Emperor had signed an unconditional surrender. They called them Holdouts. Four separate stories were soldiers didn’t realise or accept that the war was over. One had continued for 29 years after the surrender.
Amazing.
A late lunch together, then we showed them where the captains party takes place and let Chris borrow my dinner jacket and tie for the gala event. He didn’t have a dark suite, only a dark per of trousers and light coloured jacket. Amazed that it even fit his 6’6” height, but he looked great in it.
Then popped into the jewellery shop to see the new editions before heading out for a walk. Eventually crashing out once again in the sun to write more in the diary. Keep trying to catch up, but events seem to overtake the speed in which l can record them.
People kept stopping and chatting, talking about the previous evenings event, the Vice Presidents talk and all manner of juicy gossip. No wonder time disappears.
Before we new it, we were down for a shower and back out for a gala event. This time on our new table on first sitting. We had agreed to meet them at the table at 6pm. Of course they arrived once the restaurant was full, twenty minutes late having demolished a shed load of free drink. Not amused, but you can’t stay cross with them for too long, they are great fun. And l am an old boring old fart at times.
10th March 28 degrees C docked in Adelaide
Up late at 7.30 and had breakfast, then headed down to disembark the ship, or Ferry according to Chris. I am sure Mr Cunard would turn in his grave if he heard that.
After researching the internet we ascertained that you can purchase a day transport ticket for $10.60 person which allows you to use the train, bus and all the trams. Brilliant value for money.
Nevertheless we just missed the train because we were waiting for Chris and Jill in the departure lounge . In fact they weren't late, they were already outside by the shuttle bus.
So we hopped onto that for the one hour journey into the city centre.
What a clean open bright place. Instantly fell in love with it
Jumped onto the bus for Hahdorf, the old German village. Passed through some glorious countryside, climbing up over a steep mountain, or perhaps a large rambling hill, it’s all down to perspective.
Took just 45 minutes to get there, and it was quaint, but very touristy and over priced.
Saying that, we had a good stroll and ate a German bratwurst sharing platter washed down with a very expensive German beer. But so what, it was still cheaper than drinking a beer on the ship.
Then it was back on the bus for the return journey. A little concerned about the brakes on the bus as we descended back to Adelaide. They seemed to be burning, which was not surprising when you consider how long he had his foot on the brakes. Must have been a good 15 minutes. Would have expected him to drop it into a lower gear.
The gods were with us and we ended up safely back in the centre.
Chris and Jill shot off to the railway station for the return trip to the ship. They had just received a text to say that the trip to see their friend Arthur in Canada was off.
They were going to see him for his 90+ birthday, but the residential home will not allow anyone to see him if they have been on a plane or a cruise. The CoronaVirus rears it’s head all across the globe. They therefore needed to cancel the flights and see if they can get their money back. We found out later that they could, and it will only cost them £200. Initially they thought they may lose the whole £2500.
In the meantime we shot off to check out another part of Adelaide. We headed over to the library and art gallery. Both fantastic. Would’ve loved to have had some more time in the Art Gallery of South Australia it was absolutely marvellous. We could’ve spent our two hours there then lunch and then walk to the botanical Gardens.
The library was also marvellous had some very interesting things relating to prisoners who were shipped over to Australia. The charges and language used is very old school. Terms such as incorrigible rogue, rogue and vagrant. Finally idle and disorderly. He received 3 months hard labour, 1 month HL and 14 days HL, respectively.
The library also had exhibits relating to the first flights between England & Australia, The space race and the ethnic cleansing of the Aboriginals.
